Description

This mixed native hedge pack is a bundle of 10 fruit plants that produces wonderful wild jam and is easily harvested due to the bushy and shrubbery nature of the plants. To make harvesting faster, plant each type in blocks.ย

Each pack of 10 plants will make about 20โ€™ of single row hedge or 10โ€™ of double row hedge. If you choose to plant as a double row, make sure there is at least 15โ€™ of space between the two rows to allow for harvesting, sun exposure, and aeration. If you mow the span between rows, also consider mower width when the rows reach their full diameter.ย

4 Beach Plum | Prunus maritima

2 Native Elderberryย  | Sambucus canadensis

2 Black Chokeberry | Aronia melanocarpa

2 Chokecherry | Prunus virginiana

These native plants will produce a good yield of fruit for eating fresh and making hedgerow jam. As these hedgerow concepts are imported from the UK, they are customarily planted to knit together to form a stock-friendly (read: sheep), dense barrier hedge, ideal for planting around a garden. They will not fend off the deer! A productive, edible hedge will never be a tidy, formal-looking thing. It needs to be allowed to grow in order to produce a nice harvest.

Please note: when you receive our mixed hedging packs, they will not be already mixed and will be bunched by plant species. Please remember to mix them for best results.

Spacing an Edible hedge: Because you will want these plants to bear lots of fruit, you can space them a bit further apart if security isn’t an issue.

Every kit comes with a tree tag for each tree and a notebook to bring your plans into the next generation or home owner. The notebook contains room for your planting map, notes about maintenance youโ€™ve carried out and citizen science. Additionally, it includes information on: site choice and preparation; a planting guide; protection recommendations; water, mulch and pruning recommendations and notes; 1st year and longer-term management tips, and a list of trees that came with your kit including details on fruit/nut bearing, growth patterns and, if applicable, hedge management guidelines.
