Description
Five each of two cultivars of Hascaps: Lonicera caerulea ‘Czech’ and ‘Indigo Gem’.ย These are non-native fruit bushes that grow up to 3-8′ highย X 3-6′ wide
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun for maximum fruit production, though it tolerates light partial shade.
- Soil: Thrives in well-drained soil rich in organic matter or compost, adapting to a wide pH range from 4.5 to 8.5.
- Water: Needs consistent moisture when newly planted and during dry summer spells, but dislikes soggy, waterlogged ground.
- Hardiness: Extremely cold-hardy, surviving winter temperatures down to -40ยฐF or lower.ย
Need for Different Cultivars
- Cross-Pollination: Honeyberries are not self-fertile. You must plant at least two different cultivars of Lonicera caerulea to achieve fruit set.ย
- Synchronized Bloom Times: The separate varieties need to bloom at the same time so bees can transfer pollen between them. Czech varieties and Indigo Gem flower at the same time. Both belong to the Early-to-Mid spring bloom group and exhibit a highly compatible flowering overlap
