Here we are: a kit full of edible berry bushes that are non-native and/or native cultivars!

Shore up your food supply with native and non-native perennial fruit crops that – given the variety – will be more likely to withstand the increase in heat, drought and rain events in our region.

Grow these along the edge of something – your back porch or walk way – with plenty of light and air so that you can pick all of those berries and the brambles have room to roam and get out of control. Because they will. This kit includes ground covers like cranberry, low blueberry and bearberry – these can be planted tight up against the taller plants and bunched together.

We pulled together this kit to address the back yard food desires of our home-owner customers. The kit can be paired with a native fruit and/or nut kit to bump harvests and support fuller ecosystem functions.

Allow a planting area of about 12 square feet, but don’t hesitate to plant the ground covers in bunches. In years to come, you can always divide them if they become too crowded.

These are highly productive cultivars, not the wild ones. For this reason, each kit contains two different cultivars of each type for optimum cross-pollination.

Every kit comes with a tree tag for each tree and a notebook to bring your plans into the next generation or home owner. The notebook contains room for your planting map, notes about maintenance you’ve carried out and citizen science. Additionally, it includes information on: site choice and preparation; a planting guide; protection recommendations; water, mulch and pruning recommendations and notes; 1st year and longer-term management tips, and a list of trees that came with your kit including details on fruit/nut bearing, growth patterns and, if applicable, hedge management guidelines.
