Description
Plum shrubs and trees are some of the earliest flashes of white flowers seen through the browns and grays of winter; you can spot the flash of white of a wild plum in bloom through a forest of dull trees. If this flash of early nectar and pollen weren’t exciting enough, all the plums are edible – to us and the critters.
Learn the difference between a wild plum and an invasive Bradford or Callery pear Pyrus calleryanaย (which can be guerrilla grafted with domestic pear scionwood).
These wild plums want sun. They are part of the early succession level of a forest so they will sucker and grow towards the sun.
A hedgerow of white blooms will knit together over the years to house rabbits and other ground dwellers and feed birds and other animals throughout the summer months.
Learn why wild plums are on the decline
10 plants – 2 each – will start you off with a stunning spring flowering hedgerow to support early pollinators and the fruit is edible for us and critters.
